Cheerleaders and cheerleading has always gone hand in hand with American sports. Every professional and college sports team with trained athletes has cheerleaders. Are those women and men that cheer on these trained athletes actually athletes themselves? Cheerleaders are athletes because they exhibit physical strength, speed, and skill.
Cheerleaders meet all the criteria to be an athlete. They must be able to lift and hold the weight of one or more other persons above their head in the activities they participate. Speed is essential in sports like track and field when the object is to reach a certain point in the least amount of time.
These contest are judged on gymnastic and dance routines that are fast paced and last up to five minutes long. These trained athletes are strong, fast, and skilled in their field of competing.A cheerleader must be considered an athlete without a doubt and deserves much respect....
The Progression of Female Athletes
Women throughout history have made extreme progress in expanding their rights and freedoms. They have also made it a point to prove that they are as equal as men through their careers, lives, and their athletic abilities. Women have come a long way in becoming well- rounded athletes, but the discrimination is still present. Although they have substantiated themselves in many ways, women are still viewed as inferior to men, especially as athletes.
Women have always participated in extracurricular activities, and some even in sports. However, because women were the members in the households who cooked, cleaned, and took care of the family, they were limited to their activities. Women were to be seen and not heard, or so men thought.
Women were present in sports, as far back as 1500 b.c. Here they did such things as fight bulls and wrestle other women. But it was not until the 1930s that women really began to present their athletic abilities to society. From that decade on, women have been slowly increasing their interest and participation in sports.

Sports have played a major role in society since the beginning of man. From the Greeks to the present day, the influence of great athletes has been tremendous. However, today's media has enhanced sports and the people who play them traumatically. Athletes are seen all over the place, we see them in commercials, on television shows, we read about them in magazines, and we watch them on national television all of the time. Sports are some of the most watched television programs. People of all ages look up to these athletes. Athletes are expected to be responsible, positive, and mature role models. Many of the Sports Organizations like the NFL have put in league wide policies to keep athletes in line. Even though some break these policies and get in trouble with the league and sometimes the law. Most higher level athletes provide hope for young athletes all around the world. Jackie Robinson for example broke the color barrier in baseball, and gave new hope to black athletes everywhere.
